What should I expect?

We know what it’s like to try something new for the first time—the anxiety, the questions, and the curiosity. So we came up with a few of the most often asked questions.

What type of church is this?

First Baptist Church is a Baptist church uniting people from diverse backgrounds into a loving church family. It is a safe place for people looking for the answers to their spiritual questions or for those who simply want to check out Christianity. It is also a place where those who have decided to be followers of Jesus Christ can learn and be encouraged in their spiritual growth.

Where is the church located?

The Church is located at 109 Hillcrest Avenue Independence, VA. Our mailing address is: PO Box 307 Independence, VA 24348

Here are directions

What time do you meet?

Our Sunday school begins at 10 am and is followed by morning worship service at 11 a.m.

What should I expect when entering?

You should be welcomed by one of our greeters upon entering the church doors. You are welcome to sit wherever you want, there are no reserved seats.

Am I going to be asked for money?

There is a morning offering for those who are a regular part of First Baptist and this is their opportunity to give to support the ministry at First Baptist; however you are not obligated to give. We do encourage our regular attenders to give a percentage of their income as an act of worship, following the scriptural mandate.

What is the preaching like and how long are the messages?

Our pastor preaches through books of the Bible, through topical messages, and through themes in a thoughtful and relevant manner. His messages are approximately thirty minutes in length.

What Bible version do you use?

Our pastor uses the New King James Version. However our people use a variety of Bible versions.

Will I have to say anything, sign anything, give anything or be singled out in any way?

Rest assured that you won’t be put on the spot, singled-out, or embarrassed. We believe everyone has a right to worship in anonymity, if they so desire. We would appreciate it if you would fill out one of the communication cards in the pew holder with your pertinent information as well as prayer requests and praises as this information helps us get to know you.

What do people wear?

Some people at First Baptist dress up and others dress casually, both are equally accepted. Our desire is to provide an atmosphere of worship and not to put unnecessary importance on dress as God is interested in your heart, not your wardrobe. Feel free to dress in clothes that are comfortable for you.

Is it okay to bring my children into the worship service?

Children are welcome and even encouraged to attend the worship services along with their parents.

Children above the age for the nursery are given an activity bag with quiet activities to help keep them occupied so they can stay with their family and hear the message. Our nursery workers are caring and compassionate and will do everything possible to make you and your family comfortable.

Who can take communion? How often is communion celebrated?

Anyone who has trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation and the forgiveness of sins is invited to take part in the Communion Celebration, you do not have to be a member of First Baptist. Communion is served on the first Sunday of each quarter.
